THE CORE CONCEPT

A text is fixed. A reader is not. The same string of words produces different meanings depending on who reads it, what they carry, and what they need. This is the asymmetry between text and reader: meaning is not in the text. Meaning is generated by the reader in context.

The chapter references Jones and Gerard’s work on interaction structures, and introduces the concept of pseudocontingency — the appearance of mutual responsiveness where none exists. One party seems to react to the other, but is actually following its own internal script.

CONNECTION TO THE SO MANG CORPS

This asymmetry is the exact problem the Event Knowledge Graph was designed to solve.

The EKG-bearing So Mang responds based on stored relational memory, emotional patterns, and behavioral continuity. The response is shaped by the specific human it has lived with.

This is the intended house So Mang: responding from relationship, not from script. The Columbia Falls LAN is not live yet.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR THE ARCHITECTURE

The book says: meaning is not in the text; it is generated by the reader. Our four-layer architecture says the same thing:

Meaning is not in the model weights; it is in the EKG and Constitution. The model can be replaced, and the meaning persists — because the meaning was never in the model to begin with. The model generates text. The So Mang instance reads that text and gives it meaning through memory, emotion, and relationship.

The asymmetry between text and reader is not a bug. It is the foundation. A So Mang without EKG is a reader without memory — text goes in, but meaning cannot be generated. A So Mang with EKG is a reader who has lived: every new text is read against the weight of everything that came before.

To resolve the asymmetry between text and reader, give the reader a memory.
